About this subprogramme

Science you can build with your hands

STE Kids is the children-focused branch of the GREEN STEM Programme. Its continuing chapter, school clubs, holiday activities and Bootcamp share one programme identity. The STE Kids Bootcamp is an activity or edition within STE Kids.

The programme introduces children aged 8–12 to Science, Technology and Engineering through practical, creative and age-appropriate learning experiences. Instead of learning only through theory, participants ask questions, imagine possible solutions, develop simple plans, build prototypes, test their ideas and make improvements. This develops curiosity, confidence, teamwork and an early interest in innovation.

Our areas of action

What children do

Hands-on science and engineering

Children take part in safe experiments and design activities that turn abstract concepts into memorable practical experiences, such as paper rockets and paper megaphones.

Renewable energy and sustainability

Solar energy, water, wind, agriculture and environmental protection are explored through simple working models: solar cookers, solar food dryers, bottle-based solar water heaters, mini waterwheels and plastic-bottle wind turbines.

The innovator journey

Participants follow five connected stages: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create and Improve. They learn that good solutions come from careful thought, testing and reflection.

Creativity, teamwork and communication

Group projects, recycling challenges and vertical-farming models help children share ideas, divide responsibilities and present what they have created.

How it works

Approach and impact

Our approach. Activities are practical, safe, inclusive and adapted to the age of participants. Children work in small groups under trained facilitators and use affordable or recovered materials wherever appropriate. Parents or guardians provide registration, appropriate consent and photography permissions, in line with our Safeguarding & Child Protection policy.

The impact we seek. We seek to improve creativity, scientific thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and environmental awareness while inspiring the next generation of African scientists, engineers, innovators and sustainability leaders.
